NAHSS Odyssey
Bridging Cultures, Igniting Passions
The summer of 2023 was unexpected in many ways, yet transformative. A little flashback, however…
I still remember mid-2021, finishing the last of my first-year exams. And the mail came - an invitation to visit Southeast Asia as part of the Netherlands Honours summer school programme (NAHSS). What seemed like a perfect getaway from the world of nothing but lockdowns and staying at home was halted by one obvious caveat. The programme was only open to students with an NT2 Dutch language proficiency. As someone who had only been in the Netherlands for less than a year and had not even had the chance to learn much due to the pandemic, failing to meet this criterion was mildly disheartening, to say the least.
A Rollercoaster of Emotions and Opportunities
Fast forward another year, I was presented with another opportunity to go for an educational visit to Japan - this time through my study association e.t.s.v. Thor. Once again, what seemed like a perfect opportunity to an automotive enthusiast like me - travelling through Japan, working on a project with Mazda, visiting dream automotive manufacturers and universities across six major cities and prefectures - was again out of reach due to luck. As there were only limited seats for such an elusive opportunity, there had to be a raffle conducted (with 55 interested students for 22 seats). Lo and behold, finishing 10th on the waiting list (32nd total) ended my hopes of a summer in Japan, in totality. What had been going for me, however, was my progress with Dutch - moving from A2 to B2 in a year, alongside my studies. So when the email for NAHSS entered my mailbox and caught my gaze for the second time in my life, I knew it was exactly what my summer needed.

Book design is the art of incorporating the content, style, format, design, and sequence of the various components of a book into a coherent whole. In the words of Jan Tschichold, "methods and rules upon which it is impossible to improve, have been developed over centuries."
Each page is counted, but no folio or page number is expressed or printed, on either display pages or blank pages.
